CMBO Cape May Point walk- 2/2/08 & a sort of hotline update

Karl Lukens sends word about the CMBO Cape May Point walk today- 2/2/08. Looks like that had a few good birds. As Karl states below, the Barnacle goose has been on Lake Lily this afternoon and the Yellow-breasted chat seems to have ventured south in the state park in comparison to a few weeks ago. The chat evidently put on quite the show for some observers this afternoon, hanging around the hawk watch platform vicinity. Also the Common eider continue to be seen from the Point area.

Since I have not been able to get an official hotline done for this week (still catching up on piled up papers) here are some other interesting sightings.

A BLACK-HEADED GULL was reported form the Higbee Beach area on 1/26.

The SNOW BUNTINGS continue at the state park as of today, 2/2.

Also at the state park, on 1/26, an EASTERN PHOEBE was seen.

Evidently there is a NORTHERN GOSHAWK in the CMBO Northwood/Lake Lily vicinity. This bird was last seen on 1/27.

The BARNACLE GOOSE, as mentioned previously, is on Lake Lily as of about an hour ago, today, 2/2.

The last sighting of the five REDHEAD that were on Lake Lily was 1/27, along with the Barnacle goose and four Snow geese.

SHORT-EARED OWLS are being seen at Brigantine NWR and Jake's Landing in the last week.

Also reported form Brigantine NWR , on 1/29, were an OSPREY, a PEREGRINE FALCON and a MERLIN.

"This morning's CMBO Walk at Cape May Point , was breezy and chilly. We found
less ducks on Lily Lake tan in the past few days but the Coots and
Canvasback were still there. The Canada Geese came in from the fields with 4
Snow Geese but the Barnacle Goose was not with them (it arrived later after
the walk with another large flock of Canadas). As for land birds we did get
Red-bellied Woodpecker and Downy, both Kinglets, and brief glimpses at a
tough winter bird, a Yellow-breasted Chat. At St Mary's jetty we did find
the 5 Common Eiders that have been hanging around the past week or so."
